I first heard about the symbolism of the butterfly 36 hours after my son drowned. I was sitting in a hospital room when an organ donation doctor started telling me something about transformation, rebirth, and freedom.
It felt like bullshit. It was the last thing I wanted to hear. I didn’t want transformation. I wanted him—exactly as he was. My little boy with the man bun and big brown eyes, who carried magic with him everywhere he went. But somewhere deep down, I knew that doctor was right. And I hated him for it.
What I didn’t know then was that the butterfly would become a lifeline.
Would bring me so much Hope. Love. Connection. And become a constant reminder of what I now know to be true: An end is not the end.
The butterfly is proof. She goes through total darkness—complete surrender—and still comes out extraordinary. This is our butterfly story. What’s yours?
